Filtration basics

During filtration process the unwilling substance (contaminant) is appearing and tast of a filter is to stop it on the determined place and by using a proper type of filter or separator. This theme of separation of particular substances can be divided to four basic group:

 
  • Separation of solid particle - gas
  • Separation of solid particle - fluid
  • Separation of fluid - fluid
  • Separation of solid particle - solid particle
 
The main example of separation of solid particles - gas is filtration of air and laso filtration of industry gases, gas pipelines, climatization and so on. Within this process mainly filters, various kind of separators, clarifying elements and brushes are used.
 
Separation solid particle - fluid represents the most used methods of mechanical filtration, where it is requirement to filter large amount of fluid and also to eliminate large amount of solid particles in most of cases. Theese processes are mostly used in industry, where they are semi- ot fully-automated. In view of ecology, separation or filtration of drinking or non-drinking water is very important.
 
Separation fluid - fluid and solid particles - solid particles is very difficult due to problem of choosing the right filter or separator to ensure that process will be eficient both economicaly and technicaly. This application are highly specialised and it is necessary to have good teoretical and also practical skills with choosing a right filter or separator. This kind of separation is often only part of overal filtration process
 
The basic method of separation of fluid-fluid is for example destilation as heat splitting, which is very different from surface filtration. In this case it means chemical processes of separation. Other case is for example the separation by using koalescers, which can divide two different materrs by principle of mutual coupling of molecules of equal size. Special case is separation of two heterogeneous matters such as water and acid by osmotic membranes based on principle of various size of molecules.
 
The most elementar and historically the oldest method of separation solid matter - solid matter is separationf through cribble. Physical attributes of matters such as magnetic array are used in magnetical separators (e.g. in process of separating of iron ore)
 
The filtration solution is very important due to it´s efficiency and costs. It is possible to obtain effective filtration spending high costs, but in view of construction requirements it is no necessary. On the other hand if we will choose the cheapest solution, but this filtration will be not sufficient and machine could be very unreliable, which can bring higher cost on services or can reduce the durability and it should by often replaced. Therefore in process of decisioning about filtration solution it is necessary to have enough infomation about requirements for purity of relevant machine parts and industry process.
